Dr. P. Hariharan is a distinguished academic leader, researcher, and administrator with nearly four decades of exemplary service at Anna University. With 38 years of teaching experience and 34 years in academic administration, he has played a transformative role in advancing engineering education, institutional development, and student welfare at the College of Engineering Guindy (CEG) and across the Anna University system. Renowned for his visionary leadership and execution capability, Dr. Hariharan has consistently bridged academia, industry, and society—driving innovation in manufacturing engineering, strengthening research ecosystems, and enabling inclusive, student-centric growth.

Academic and Research Contributions

Dr. Hariharan has made significant contributions to teaching, research, and laboratory development in the field of manufacturing engineering. He has been instrumental in establishing state-of-the-art facilities such as the Computer-Aided Manufacturing Laboratory, Advanced Machine Tools Laboratory, and Precision Engineering Laboratory, which continue to support high-quality teaching and cutting-edge research.

A committed research mentor, he has guided 20 Ph.D. scholars and is currently supervising three doctoral candidates, in addition to mentoring over 200 undergraduate and postgraduate projects. His scholarly output includes more than 120 research publications in reputed international journals, reflecting his sustained engagement with emerging technologies and manufacturing innovations.

His research leadership is evident through several funded projects. As Co-Principal Investigator of a DRDO-sponsored project on Nano Thermal Barrier Coatings for Diesel Engines (₹2.34 Crores, 2019–2025), he has contributed to advancements in thermal management technologies. He has also played key roles in DST-FIST initiatives, strengthening institutional research infrastructure, and led international collaborations such as
the EU-funded Virtual Lab in Mechatronics. 

Industry Engagement and Capacity Building 

Dr. Hariharan has consistently fostered strong industry-academia linkages. He has organized numerous conferences and workshops in emerging domains such as Smart Manufacturing, IoT, AR/VR, and Digital Twin technologies. His commitment to skill development is reflected in conducting over 40 specialized training programs in CNC and CAM. 

He has actively contributed to national-level initiatives such as TEQIP, organizing eight major programs, and has served as Co-Chairman of the AIMTDR 2018 International Conference, a premier global forum in manufacturing research. Through structured
internship initiatives, he has facilitated industry exposure for approximately 30 students annually, enhancing their employability and practical competencies.

Institutional Leadership and Administrative Excellence
Head of Department (2014–2018)

As Head of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering, Dr. Hariharan led comprehensive modernization efforts, including renovation of academic spaces, enhancement of accessibility through infrastructure improvements, and establishment of advanced research laboratories featuring 5-axis CNC and micro-machining systems. He introduced best practices such as the 5S methodology, supported by industry collaboration, and fostered a culture of innovation and
technical excellence.

Executive Warden, CEG Hostels (2009–2020)

In one of his most impactful roles, Dr. Hariharan transformed the hostel ecosystem at CEG. He expanded accommodation capacity from 1,500 to 4,000 students, established a mega dining facility with 1,500 seating capacity, and introduced modern amenities including steam-based cooking systems, dishwashers, and energy-efficient infrastructure.

He pioneered digital transformation in hostel management by implementing Tamil Nadu’s first online hostel management portal (2014), enabling seamless administration, fee collection, and inventory control. His initiatives in student welfare included the establishment of a Student Amenities Centre, appointment of professional counsellors, and reintroduction of postgraduate accommodation.

His focus on sustainability led to the installation of solar power systems, rainwater harvesting, water reuse mechanisms, and green campus initiatives. Under his leadership, all hostel messes achieved FSSAI certification, ensuring high standards of food safety and quality.

Director – Centre for Student Affairs (2018–2021)

Dr. Hariharan implemented a centralized online fee collection system covering over 450 affiliated colleges, significantly improving administrative efficiency and transparency. He also introduced structured documentation practices and streamlined grievance redressal mechanisms, enhancing student satisfaction and institutional responsiveness.

Director – Centre for Constituent Colleges (2021–Present)

In this role, he has overseen large-scale faculty and infrastructure development across Anna University’s constituent colleges. He facilitated the regularization of faculty and staff, managed complex administrative processes including transfers and promotions, and enabled major infrastructure investments totaling ₹72.95 Crores across 14 colleges.

He played a pivotal role in conceptualizing and advancing the Common Engineering Facility Centre (₹400 Crores) in collaboration with TIDCO and Tata Technologies, aimed at creating world-class facilities in design, simulation, and advanced manufacturing. 

His contributions to student welfare include book banks for SC/ST students, skill development programs for over 1,400 girl students, and deployment of smart campus solutions such as IoT-enabled facilities.

Dean, College of Engineering Guindy (2025–Present)

As Dean of CEG, Dr. Hariharan continues to drive academic innovation and infrastructure development. He has introduced student-driven initiatives such as Quantum Computing, FinTech, and Additive Manufacturing Clubs, fostering interdisciplinary learning and future-ready skills.

He has spearheaded modernization of classrooms through digital interactive boards and significantly enhanced campus infrastructure and student amenities, including IoT-enabled laundry systems, upgraded gyms, and improved connectivity across hostel facilities.

A key highlight of his tenure is the mobilization of ₹7.25 Crores through CSR and alumni contributions, supporting initiatives such as AR/VR laboratories, virtual CNC simulators, robotics kits, smart communication systems, and healthcare facility upgrades. He has also facilitated the establishment of Centers of Excellence, including an Institute for Problem Solving (₹5 Crores) and an AI Center (₹1 Crore).

Alumni Engagement and Social Impact

Dr. Hariharan has actively strengthened alumni relations, leveraging their support for institutional development and student welfare. He initiated a Needy Students Scholarship Fund, mobilizing approximately ₹30 Lakhs annually to support around 150 students. Alumni contributions have also enabled improvements in campus infrastructure, Wi-Fi connectivity, water management, and community-oriented projects.
